Before electronic navigation, parallel rules were familiar instruments on chart tables. Their hinged brass arms allow the two wooden edges to move across a chart while remaining parallel, enabling a navigator to transfer a bearing or course from one position to another. Instruments of this type belong to an era when navigation depended on charts, observation and careful calculations made by hand.
