Brass Davy-type lamp, used to detect gas underground. The flame's colour and length changed in the presence of methane, giving miners a warning before it became dangerous. The wick could be trimmed from underneath using a built-in pricker, without needing to open the lamp. E. Thomas & Williams has made these in Aberdare since 1860, and still does today.
